What is "Credit Repair"?

Credit Repair: Does it Actually Work?

Many companies claim that they can increase your credit score quickly through their so-called "credit repair" programs. If you have a low credit score, these companies may seem like a cheap and effective option for you. These companies promise that they can clean up your credit so that your score increases, resulting in lower interest loans and credit card rate. However, does this actually work? What do they actually do?

Most of the time, these quick-fix credit repair companies are not effective. They are simply providing a band-aid for a long-term problem. Anything that a credit repair company does, you can do yourself to "clean up" your credit. These companies will dispute your derogatory accounts and claim that they are not yours and try to have them removed from your credit report. The problem is that these accounts are yours; they do belong to you. Neither you, or a credit repair company, can legally remove accurate negative information from your credit report.

IMPORTANT TIP: It is illegal for a company to collect non-refundable fees upfront for credit repair services.

The bottom line is that a lot of these credit repair companies make you promises that sound great, if they actually work. The vast majority of the time, their tactics are not legal and are NOT effective.

The only way to increase your credit score is through credit REBUILDING, not credit repair. Credit rebuilding takes time and it takes effort. You have to work at it.
